Reverse Discount Calculator

Find the original price from a sale price, for percentage or fixed discounts.

About this tool

Sale tags often show only the final price and the discount offered. A reverse discount calculator recovers the price before the discount so you can check whether the deal is real or compare it with another store.

Enter the price you pay, choose a percentage or fixed discount and the tool shows the original price, the money saved and the effective discount.

How to use the Reverse Discount Calculator

  1. Enter the price you actually pay after the discount.
  2. Choose whether the discount was a percentage or a fixed amount.
  3. Enter the discount value.
  4. Press Calculate to see the original price, savings and effective discount.

Practical examples

Percentage: a jacket sells for Rs. 1,400 after a 30% discount. Original = 1,400 / (1 - 0.30) = Rs. 2,000, so you save Rs. 600.
Fixed: a phone costs Rs. 17,999 after Rs. 2,000 off. Original = 17,999 + 2,000 = Rs. 19,999.

How it works

A percentage discount multiplies the original price by (1 - d/100). Reversing it means dividing the final price by (1 - d/100), not adding d% to it. Adding 30% to 1,400 gives 1,820, which is wrong.

A fixed discount is subtracted directly, so original = final + discount. Savings = original - final, and effective discount % = savings / original x 100.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just add the discount percentage back?

Because the discount was taken from the larger original price. 30% off 2,000 is 600, but 30% of 1,400 is only 420.

What if two discounts were stacked?

Reverse them one at a time, starting with the last discount applied.

Does this include tax?

No. If the price includes GST, use the reverse GST calculator first.

Why is 100% not allowed?

A 100% discount makes the final price zero for any original price, so the original cannot be recovered.
