Target Marks Calculator

Work out the marks you still need to reach a target percentage in any exam total.

Leave blank if all papers are done: it then equals the total.

About this tool

Whether you are aiming for 60% in a board exam or a distinction in a university course, it helps to know exactly how many marks you still need. This calculator compares what you have scored with what the target demands.

It also handles partly finished assessments: if only some papers are evaluated, tell the tool how many marks have been marked so far and it shows what you need from the remaining papers.

How to use the Target Marks Calculator

  1. Enter the maximum marks for the entire exam or course.
  2. Enter the marks you have obtained.
  3. Enter the percentage you want to reach.
  4. If some papers are still pending, fill "Marks already evaluated out of" with the maximum marks of the papers already marked.
  5. Press Calculate to see current percentage, additional marks and what is needed from the remaining portion.

Practical examples

Full exam: total 500, obtained 270, target 60%. Marks needed = 500 x 60 / 100 = 300. Additional = 30.
Mid-way: total 600, 300 marks of papers evaluated, you scored 180 (60%). For 70% overall you need 420 marks, so 240 more out of the remaining 300, or 80% in the pending papers.

How it works

Current % = obtained / marks evaluated x 100. Marks needed overall = total x target / 100. Additional marks = marks needed - obtained, never below zero.

Required performance on the remaining papers = additional marks / (total - marks evaluated) x 100. If this is above 100% the tool warns you that the target is not reachable.
